Retired Romanian footballer becomes PM’s adviser on sports, Euro 2020

Former footballer Gheorghe Popescu will advise prime minister Mihai Tudose on sports issues, the PM said in a TV show. Popescu will also manage Romania’s preparations for hosting four matches in the 2020 European Football Championship (UEFA Euro 2020). Popescu was a key player of the Romanian national football team in the 1990s and was also captain of FC Barcelona. “Starting today I have a new adviser on UEFA organization issues and sports. His name is Gică Popescu. I’m very grateful that he accepted. He’s a footballer, a well-known person, a manager. Hats off!,” Tudose said. Bucharest is one of the 13 cities that will host football matches during the European Championships in 2020 (Euro 2020). At the end of last year, the Bucharest City Hall decided to set up a new department that would implement the measures required by UEFA for the four football matches Bucharest will host at the Euro 2020 championship. The upgrade of the city's road infrastructure was requested by UEFA. The city also needs to refit its public transport system so as to accommodate the incoming visitors.
