Former Bucharest policeman gets 19-year prison sentence in pedophilia, sexual assault case

Bucharest’s District 6 Court sentenced former police officer Eugen Stan to 19 years in prison in the case in which he is accused of pedophilia and sexual assault. The decision is not final, however, and can be appealed, Mediafax reported.

In 2018, when they sent the former policeman to court, the prosecutors said that Stan allegedly sexually assaulted 18 people, aged between 5 and 38 years, in Bucharest.

The former policeman was arrested in January 2018after sexually assaulting two children in an elevator of an apartment building in Bucharest. The children were five and nine years old at that time. He later became a primary suspect in other similar cases.

The case put the spotlight on the Romanian Police’s problems, including how the Police tests its staff. The scandal triggered by this case also led to changes at the top of the Romanian Police.
