Romania’s anticorruption head urges Govt. to repeal ordinance on justice

The interim chief prosecutor of Romania’s National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA), Călin Nistor, announced on February 28 that he informed prime minister Viorica Dăncilă and justice minister Tudorel Toader that DNA would be left without two section heads starting March 20 in the context of emergency ordinance (OUG) 7 [that amends the justice laws], Mediafax reported

As an effect of OUG 7, the section heads can not have their terms, which expire on March 20, renewed. This will hinder the functioning of their respective sections, since the two can no longer endorse the files completed by their former subordinates. Under these circumstances Nistor urged both PM Dancila and Minister Toader to initiate the procedures required for the appointment of new section heads.

There are other vacant senior prosecutor seats and OUG 7 is only complicating the appointment of senior prosecutors. For these reasons, Nictor urged the Government to repeal OUG 7.

Meanwhile, more prosecutors and judges have joined the protests against the ordinances on justice throughout the country. The Bucharest Court, one of the biggest in Romania, decided on Thursday to suspend court proceedings until March 7, except for urgent cases, according to Hotnews.ro.
