Romanian actors join protests against Govt.’s new justice ordinance

Thousands have taken to the streets once again on Sunday evening, March 3, unhappy with the new amendments on justice introduced by the government through the emergency ordinance (OUG) 7. Meanwhile, actors from Bucharest and other cities across the country have also joined the protests.

Thousands of people have attended yet another street protest organized in Bucharest on Sunday while others have taken to the streets in other big cities such as Cluj-Napoca, Sibiu, and Constanta. The protesters in Bucharest gathered in Victoriei Square as usual and then marched to the headquarters of the Ministry of Justice. They chanted slogans against the justice changes, the ruling party PSD, and against justice minister Tudorel Toader, carrying the flags of Romania and the EU.

Meanwhile, some actors have also decided to protest in front of the National Theater of Bucharest on Sunday evening, in solidarity with the magistrates in Romania. The actors urged the government to repeal the emergency ordinance and asked the justice minister to resign, local News.ro reported. Among them well-known actor Victor Rebengiuc, Mariana Mihut, Mihai Calin and Marius Manole.

Actors of the Baia Mare Municipal Theater also protested in front of the institution on Sunday evening, according to local Ziarmm.ro, while several actors of the National Theater in Cluj-Napoca did the same thing one day before, on Saturday.

Several judiciary institutions have been protesting in Romania against the new emergency ordinance on justice adopted by the government, which has a significant impact on the functioning of the local justice system. Some magistrates even suspended their activity.
