Sculpture by Romanian Brancusi sells for record sum at New York auction

La Jeune Fille Sophistiquée (Portrait de Nancy Cunard), a work by famous Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi, sold for USD 71 million at a Christie’s auction in New York, on Tuesday evening, May 15.

Three bidders competed for the bronze sculpture. A telephone bidder whose identity was not revealed won the auction.

This is the third-highest price ever paid for a sculpture, after two sculptures by Alberto Giacometti, which sold for over USD 100 million.

In May 2017, La muse endormie (Sleeping Muse), a 1913 bronze cast work of Constantin Brancusi, sold for USD 57.36 million at Christie’s Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale in New York.
