14 July 2017

An incident occurred on Thursday, July 13, during the military drill performed within the Saber Guardian multinational exercise organized at the Cincu training area in central Romania. An ammunition fragment landed in the garden of a house located some 300 meters away from the training area.

The Romanian Ministry of National Defense (MApN) has started an investigation in this case.

“The Command of the Getica National Joint Training Center (CNII) in Cincu was informed on Thursday, July 13, around 18:00, that a metallic piece of ammunition detached following a ricochet fell on a plot of land on the outskirts of Merghindeal, Sibiu County, some 300 meters from the side edge of the Cincu shooting range, without any victims being registered,” reads a statement from MApN.

“An administrative research team headed by the CNII commander, who investigates the causes of the event, went to the scene. From the research team's observations, the metallic element didn’t cause an explosion on impact.”

Drills involving artillery firing, tanks and armored techniques took place at Cincu training center on Thursday, July 13, between 16:00 and 16:55, according to the Ministry’s statement.
