Sources: Pitesti-Sibiu highway could see new delay

18 August 2017

Romania’s National Highways Company (CNAIR) has terminated the contract for the feasibility study of the Pitesti-Sibiu highway, according to sources in the Transport Ministry cited by local Hotnews.ro.

The contract dates back to 2015. It has been prolonged once, despite criticism from an EU institution and infrastructure companies.

Italian firm Spea and the Romanian company Tecnic Consulting have provided the feasibility studies for two out of the five highway segments. The association has missed the deadline for the other segments and CNAIR refused to grant it a new postponement.

CNAIR will try to make the feasibility study on its own, according to the sources.

The Pitesti-Sibiu highway is crucial for linking Romania’s capital Bucharest and the Black Sea port of Constanta to Western Europe. The highway is part of European Corridor IV and Romania can access EU funds for building it.
