Romania, close to deal for armored carriers for its Army

Romania has reached the final negotiation stages with U.S. group General Dynamics for equipping the Army with armored carriers, according to defense minister Mihai Fifor. He hopes to finalize negotiations this week and announce when the contract would be signed. “Many have asked why we haven’t signed the contract end last year. The answer is crystal clear – we had not negotiated enough and we wanted to make sure the Romanian state benefits from a good price for the carriers,” added the minister during a press conference. Romania is in the process of equipping its army with HIMARS rockets, multifunctional corvettes, Patriot missile systems and new helicopters. The country has committed to spending 2% of its GDP on defense, most of the money going into military equipment. Romania will buy 227 US Piranha armored carriers editor@romania-insider.com
