Current account deficit up over two-fold in Romania

Romania’s current account deficit reached EUR 172 million in the first two months of 2018, more than two times higher on the same period of 2017. It stood at EUR 72 million in the first two months of 2017, according to Romania’s National Bank BNR. Goods posted a deficit higher by EUR 434 million, while services and secondary goods posted surpluses which were however smaller by EUR 6 million and EUR 2 million respectively. Primary revenues posted a EUR 170 million surplus, compared to a deficit of EUR 172 million in the same period of 2017. The country’s total external debt rose by EUR 1.5 billion in the first two months of the year. Long – term debt, about three quarters of total external debt, stood at EUR 69.5 billion, up 1.3% on end – 2017. Short-term debt grew by 2.7% year to date, to some EUR 25.5 billion.
