UK clinic Castle Craig Hospital wants to open rehab facility in Romania next year

05 November 2010

British rehab clinic Castle Craig Hospital, the largest hospital for the treatment of addictions in the UK is currently looking for a Romanian health care operator partners to open a rehab clinic in Romania, Rupert Wolfe Murray, the company's representative for Romania told Romania-Insider.com. “There is no proper rehab facility in Romania,” says Wolfe Murray.

The rehab facility would initially focus on the pre- and post -rehab treatment, says Wolfe Murray. Castle Craig Hospital aims to set up a small psychiatric unit for addiction treatment in Romania and have it running next year.

Castle Craig Hospital provides inpatient treatment for those suffering from alcohol and drug addiction. In UK, it runs a facility in the countryside, on 50 acres (around 20 hectares) of parkland and woods (in picture). In Romania, the target is not necessarily to build a clinic, but rather use existing facilities for setting up a rehab center. The operator is also targeting potential Romanian and foreign patients who live in Romania and who would seek treatment in its UK clinic.

Castle Craig Hospital is located in the countryside of the Scottish Borders, close to Edinburgh. Castle Craig was founded in 1988 by Peter and Margaret McCann, who had previously founded Clouds House in Wiltshire in 1983. A Castle Craig Hospital rehab branch has also been opened in the Netherlands.

The treatment process is based on the Minnesota model and promotes the 12-step program as a way of recovery from chemical dependency. Castle Craig has a 50 percent success rate - the number of people who maintain abstinence. The cost of a program in UK could reach around 20,000 pounds. The initial treatment spreads over 6 weeks but there are patients who stay in the clinic for six to 12 months.
