Uber wants emergency ordinance that changes Romania's transport law stopped

23 May 2017

The ride-sharing app Uber is worried about its future in Romania as the Government is close to adopting an emergency ordinance that will amend the taxi transport law and will affect the company’s activity.

If the ordinance is adopted, all Uber drivers risk being fined, according to the company, reports local Hotnews.ro.

Uber representatives have complained that authorities gave up to the pressure of taxi drivers, who staged massive protests in Bucharest. They urged authorities to take inspiration from the laws of countries like Estonia, the UK or Portugal, which have encouraged ridesharing services.

Romania doesn’t have a ridesharing legislation that could make the difference between anonymous, illegal, unclassified services, and ridesharing services like Uber, said Uber Romania spokesperson Alexandra Corolea. Uber has over 300,000 users in Romania.

At the end of April, representatives of the Confederation of Certified Operators and Carriers in Romania (COTAR) and of the Government signed an agreement to come up with a new law on taxi transport within maximum 30 days following massive protests of taxi drivers.
