Tulcea county boasts sharpest rise in tourist count during 2018

14 January 2019

The number of tourists in Tulcea county, which hosts Danube Delta, increased to 161,290 in January-October, which was 77% more than in the same period of 2017 (y/y terms) according to the statistics office INS.

In June-October, the occupancy rate was maximum, meaning that nearly 9,800 accommodation places in Tulcea county were occupied almost permanently, local Wall-street.ro reported. For comparison, the number of tourists country-wide increased by only 6% in January-October.

Out the total number of tourists visiting Tulcea, 25,273 (+12% y/y)  were foreign tourists and 136,000 (+98% y/y) were Romanians.

"The increase in the number of tourists was a result of the national and international promotion actions undertaken by the Danube Delta Tourism Management Association in cooperation with the business community and the county and local authorities. The holiday vouchers also had a major contribution alongside the other measures taken at the governmental and county level. It was very important to change the vision on the promotion of the Danube Delta and North Dobrogea and to build an integrated tourism product based on multiculturalism, traditions, crafts, gastronomy, biodiversity, a strategy that shows its results after many years of stagnation or successive falls," said Catalin Tibuleac, president of the Danube Delta Tourism Destination Management Association.
