Romania spends little on social protection related to housing

Romania was among the last countries in European Union for the expenditure allocated from the national GDP for social protection related to housing. Romania spent less than 0.1% of its GDP, similar to other countries such as Bulgaria, Estonia, Croatia, Cyprus or Slovakia.

Great Britain ranked first, with 1.3% of its GDP spent on social protection related to housing, according to EU’s statistical office Eurostat. The EU member states allocated almost EUR 81 billion on social protection for housing in 2015, or 0.5% of EU’s GDP.

On the other side, Romania was among the EU countries with the highest GDP percentage allocated for “housing and community amenities”. It spent 1.5% of the GDP in 2015, surpassed only by Cyprus and Bulgaria. This category includes housing development, community development, water supply or street lighting.
