Romania’s population drops by two million in ten years

Romania’s population has decreased by almost two million inhabitants since 2007, according to the National Statistics Institute (INS). Other estimates indicate an even more significant decline in Romania's population in the last ten years, amounting to three-four million inhabitants. It’s very difficult to estimate the decrease of the population because in some villages the population has disappeared altogether and it is very hard to find out who is missing, said Ilie Dumitrescu, cabinet director within INS. In March, Romania’s population lost 7,420 inhabitants, 1% more than in the same month last year, according to INS data. This represents the equivalent of two average villages. In 2016, Romania’s population shrunk by over 66,700 due to the natural decline and immigration. Statistics: Demographic aging deepens in Romania editor@romania-insider.com
