Romania's General Prosecutor's Office closes case involving former premier

The Romanian General Prosecutor's Office classified a case in which the former Prime Minister Victor Ponta was being charged with tax evasion. The file closed with the argument that the “deed didn’t exist”. In September 2015, the National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA) sent Victor Ponta to court in the Rovinari-Turceni case for forgery in private documents (17 offenses), complicity to tax evasion, and money laundering. DNA then split the case in two. It kept the part where Ponta was accused of conflict of interests and sent the other part to the General Prosecutor's Office. In March, DNA classified the part on conflicts of interests whereas the General Prosecutor's Office yesterday closed the other part of the case. This means that Victor Ponta is now free of charges in this file. Prosecutors initially accused him of appointing Dan Sova as minister after receiving benefits from him in the past, including the right to use a car. editor@romania-insider.com
