Romanian photographer among the winners of 2017 World Press Photo contest

Romanian photographer Vadim Ghirda is one of the winners of the 2017 World Press Photo contest. His photo, named Migrant Crossing, got the second prize in the Contemporary Issues category. The photo was taken on March 14, 2016, and was commissioned by The Associated Press. It shows a woman supported by two men while crossing a river, as refugees were trying to reach Macedonia on a route that would bypass the border fence. American Jonathan Bachman won the first prize in the same category, with the photo titled Taking a Stand in Baton Rouge, while German Daniel Etter won the third prize with The Libyan Migrant Trap. The big winner of the 2017 World Press Photo contest is Turkish Burhan Ozbilici with his photo called An Assassination in Turkey. The photo was taken in December last year, and captured the moment when Mevlüt Mert Altıntaş shouted after shooting Andrey Karlov, the Russian ambassador to Turkey, at an art gallery in Ankara, Turkey. The winning images of the 2017 World Press Photo contest were selected from 80,408 images made by 5,034 photographers from 125 different countries. Find the entire list of winners here.
