The Romanian Govt. plans to keep brilliant students in the country with EUR 3,500 grants

Romania’s Ministry of Research (MCI) will set up the "CDI Carol I Grant" program, which will award research grants worth EUR 1,500-3,500 per year to high school graduates with outstanding results in national and international contests, provided that they follow a university in Romania and work for at least four years in a local research unit, either public or private. The program is addressed to the young high school graduates who during the four years of high school had outstanding results in national and international contests, winning at least one of the places 1, 2 or 3 in these competitions. The highest grants of EUR 2,500-3,500 will be awarded to students who scored high results in international competitions. Those who won the places 1, 2 or 3 in national contests can get grants of EUR 1,500-2,500 per year. The grants are offered for 3 + 2 or 4 + 2 years, according to a press release of the Research Ministry. People who benefit from these grants have the obligation to pursue a university in Romania and, after completing undergraduate studies, to pursue doctoral studies in Romania. They also need to work at least 4 years in technological development activities. Romania’s best students, who get good results in international Olympiads, usually choose to leave the country and study abroad, mostly in the U.S., where top universities offer them scholarships as well as much better conditions to start or continue their own research projects.
