Romania among the 13 EU Member States that object to amending EU Treaties

Thirteen member states of the European Union, including Romania, objected to the proposed amendments to the Union's treaties, Cursdeguvernare.ro reported.

The amendments were outlined on May 9 by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and French President Emmanuel Macron, whose country holds the six-month EU Council presidency.

The report marking the end of the Conference on the Future of Europe includes 49 proposals to amending the European treaties, with the most significant change being the abolition of the veto.

A key ambition of the plan is to remove member states' veto rights in certain sensitive policy areas, such as health, taxation, defense and future members.

In the absence of a veto, decisions in key areas could be by a majority - 15 of the 27 member states vote in favor, as long as they represent more than 65% of the EU population of 450 million.
