Ruling party still seen as winner of European elections in Romania – EP estimations

The ruling Social Democratic Party (PSD) is still seen as the winner of the upcoming European elections in Romania, being the Romanian party expected to get most seats in the European Parliament (EP), according to new estimations from the European Parliament (EP).

The report released last week, which was prepared by Kantar Public for the Public Opinion Monitoring Unit of the European Parliament’s Directorate-General for Communication, said that PSD would get a score of 29% in the May 26 European elections, which bring the party 11 seats in the European Parliament. Romania will have a total of 33 seats in the EP, one more than at present.

The National Liberal Party (PNL) would rank second among Romanian parties (not far behind PSD), with a score of 24.7% (9 seats), followed by the newly formed electoral alliance USR-PLUS, which would win 14.2% of votes (5 seats in the EP). The junior ruling party ALDE comes next with a share of 10.7% (4 seats), followed by Pro Romania – 9.6% (3 seats), and the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) – 5% (1 seat).

On the other hand, PMP, the party founded by former president Traian Basescu (who announced his candidacy), is expected to not get any seats in the EP following the upcoming elections, as it would take only 4.7% of votes, which is below the 5% threshold.
