Power outages in Romania last twice as long as in Europe

Every Romanian power consumer was left in the dark, on average, 350 minutes last year.

The duration of power outages in Romania is thus double compared to “advanced European countries,” according to a report on the performance indicators of energy distribution operators in 2019, published by the National Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE), Bursa reported.

The average duration of the planned interruptions last year was 171 minutes for each consumer. The unplanned outages lasted 179 minutes per consumer.

The System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) indicator measures the average length of network outages for a user. It is calculated by dividing the cumulative length of lengthy outages (over three minutes) by the total number of users.

The ANRE report highlights that the overall aggregate values for SAIDI, planned outages, vary significantly from one distribution operator to another. The minimum value is 55.34 minutes per year for E-Distribuţie Muntenia, and the maximum is 287.86 minutes per year for Delgaz Grid.

The national average is 171.09 minutes per year, compared to an interval of about 40 - 150 minutes per year registered in advanced European countries. The situation is similar in the case of unplanned outages.
