Romania’s Chamber of Deputies adopted on Monday, July 27, as a decision-making body, the draft law that stipulates that the Parliament sets the date of the parliamentary elections - as opposed to the Government under existing legislation, local daily Adevarulreported.
The electoral calendar will be set under a so-called “organic law,” a bill that needs the endorsement of the majority of all MPs, as opposed to the majority of present MPs required for ordinary law.
The proposal adopted by the deputies goes to promulgation.
The deputies rejected the amendment filed by Save Romania Union (USR) that would have allowed extending the voting period to two days.
The authors of the amendments argued this would help in the context of the coronavirus pandemic.
Prime ministerLudovic Orban said that the ruling Liberal Party (PNL) is evaluating the legal grounds for sending the draft law to the Constitutional Court for a constitutional check.
He argued that the new law legalizes a conflict of interest as the lawmakers are now supposed to decide when their terms should end.
