Media reports 15 Pakistanis allegedly held for ransom in Romania

Fifteen Pakistanis who were on their way to Germany were allegedly kidnapped for ransom and detained in Romania, according to Pakistani English-language newspaper The Express Tribune. The information hasn't been confirmed yet by other sources or by the Romanian authorities. The men were on their way to the EU from Turkey, according to a member of the family of one of those abducted. Saeeda Bib told The Express Tribune the kidnappers were asking for EUR 10,000 for the release of each of the men. According to another family member, some of the kidnapped men had paid to head to Turkey, and afterwards to the EU. The families of those kidnapped were asking human rights organizations and the Pakistani government to “play their part” in the release effort, also saying they do not have the money the kidnappers were demanding. The Turkish police rescued this January six Pakistani expats abducted by human smugglers in Istanbul, The Express Tribune reported. Another three Pakistanis were abducted for ransom in Turkey in March, and released by their captors after 23 days. In both cases those kidnapped had been tortured.
