Former mayor of biggest city in NE Romania sentenced to five years in jail for bribery
Gheorghe Nichita, the former mayor of Iasi - the biggest city in northeastern Romania, was given a final five-year jail sentence by the Bucharest Court of Appeal on August 5, Mediafaxreported.

Gheorghe Nichita, the former mayor of Iasi - the biggest city in northeastern Romania, was given a final five-year jail sentence by the Bucharest Court of Appeal on August 5, Mediafaxreported.
He thus received an extra year compared to the sentence ruled by the inferior court. Nichita was found guilty of bribe-taking.
The former mayor received 10% of a contract awarded to local tech company UTI and another firm, as well as discounts at a luxury hotel in Bucharest and accommodation in China.
The prosecutors estimated the total amounts and benefits received as a bribe by Gheorghe Nichita at RON 3.7 million (EUR 560,000).
On November 13, 2017, the Bucharest Court sentenced Nichita to four years in prison, but he challenged the decision.
In the same case, local businessman Tiberiu Urdăreanu, the UTI group founder, was sentenced to eight months in prison with suspension for bribery, a sentence upheld by the Bucharest Court of Appeal on August 5.
