Former mayor sent to court for over 1,000 abuse of office charges

Romania’s National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA) sent to court the former Caracal mayor Gheorghe Anghel for over 1,000 charges of abuse of office. The damage in this case is estimated at RON 5 million (EUR 1.09 million), according to Agerpres. In the same case, 17 other people were sent to court, including civil servants and company representatives, for abuse of office and forgery. According to prosecutors, the former mayor built an organized crime group, together with the institution’s economic director Maria Tudor. The group stole public funds between 2009 and 2012 by using forged documents. For example, Anghel Gheorghe used discretionary the local budget, according to prosecutors.
