Romania’s Superior Council of Magistracy claims judiciary is targeted by destabilization campaign after media investigation

Udpate: The prosecutors’ section of the Superior Council of Magistracy - CSM has taken a different stance from the council’s judges’ section in response to the Recorder documentary, announcing) that it will verify the accuracy of the conclusions drawn about prosecutors’ activity. The statement says that if the allegations presented were true, they could suggest a serious failure of the judicial system, but stressed that internal control mechanisms already exist and must be used to assess the claims.

Unlike the CSM judges’ section, which accused the media investigation of contributing to a campaign to destabilize the judiciary, the prosecutors’ section argued that linking systemic problems to recent changes in magistrates’ service pensions is merely “conjunctural” and risks manipulating public opinion, while noting that repeated amendments to the justice laws between 2017 and 2022 disrupted the functioning of prosecution offices.
