Bucharest to open new 3.3 km bike lane this year

Bucharest City Hall awarded the contract for the setting up of a new bike lane of 3.3 km, mayor Nicusor Dan announced on Thursday, May 5. Work will begin in the coming days and will last two months.

The new bike lane will be built in the capital's District 1, on the route Piata Presei Libere - Kiseleff Boulevard - Constantin Prezan Boulevard.

"The future bike lane is part of Route 1 of a project with four routes, with a total length of 48.25 kilometres, of which the municipality has so far built a third," mayor Dan said.

The works are to be carried out by the Bucharest Metropolitan Buildings Trust. The contract's value is RON 3.94 million, without VAT, and the financing is provided by the National Environment Fund, managed by the Ministry of Environment.

The project "Implementation of a bicycle transport system in the central area of Bucharest," which benefits from non-reimbursable financing, has a total length of 48.25 km, respectively 4 routes, the City Hall said.

Of these, the local authorities have so far executed 16.15 km of new lanes, respectively Section 1 of Route 1, with a length of 6 km on the route Victoriei Square - Aviatorilor Boulevard - Beijing Boulevard - Nicolae Caramfil street - Pipera Road, and Route 3, with a length of 10.15 km between Calea Victoriei - Regina Elisabeta Boulevard - Națiunile Unite Boulevard - Splaiul Independenței.

Contracts are yet to be awarded for the other new routes.
