Bucharest City Hall gives EUR 3.3 mln for cathedral

The Bucharest General Council voted for the allocation of a RON 15 million (over EUR 3.3 million) financial support for the People’s Salvation Cathedral, currently under construction near the Parliament’s Palace. Bucharest mayor Gabriela Firea made this proposal, which was voted by the Council with 31 votes in favor and 20 votes against. “Please vote for the granting of this financial support because this is more than a church. I suggest we give the money because this ensemble will include a school, a social canteen, an auditorium with sacred music,” Firea said before the vote, reports local Mediafax. She also said that she would present an investment plan for hospitals during the Council’s next meeting, “which will involve giving more money than we’re offering now for the cathedral.” The Antim Monastery will also receive RON 4.5 million (some EUR 1 million) from the city’s general budget, as the General Council also voted for this proposal.
