Animal Police to be set up in Romania

A draft Emergency Ordinance on setting up the Animal Police in Romania was put up for public debate on Tuesday, August 25, interior minister Marcel Vela announced.

According to the project, police officers will have the right to enter private property without a warrant if the information indicates that an animal is in danger, and they can confiscate the animal, Digi24 reported.

Also, the police officers can use force and the resources available to them during interventions to rescue an animal. The actions of police officers may be photographed or recorded without the consent of the animal’s owners.

In addition, the abused animals will be housed in public shelters for treatment and then given up for adoption.

The policemen can intervene, for example, if an animal is being hurt or tortured, in case of fights between animals or with animals, or if they have information that living animals are being used for the training of animals or to control their aggression.

The Animal Police will operate as a department of the Romanian Police.
