Only 40% of the intersections in Bucharest are monitored

Only 176 of the 434 intersections in Bucharest are part of the Traffic Management Center’s monitoring system. Moreover, the monitoring system is operational in only 120 intersections, due to the urban public works, said Bucharest mayor Gabriela Firea on Friday, reports local Profit.ro. This is the main reason for Bucharest’s “suffocating traffic”, she added. The municipality pays about EUR 90,000-100,000 for this system every month. The city also needs more public buses, parking places, as well as a dedicated lane for public transport. Firea spoke during a visit to Bucharest’s Traffic Management Center. The contract for traffic monitoring in Bucharest was signed at the end of 2010 and entered into force at the beginning of 2011. In 2014, after the first part of the contract was completed, the city hall extended the initial contract for another three years, the mayor explained.
