Romanians set up 63,374 companies in the first five months of this year, up 23% over the same period last year.

The number of new limited liability companies (SRL) increased by 24.2% year-on-year, reaching 43,500, according to Romania’s Trade Registry - ONRC. These accounted for 68.6% of all new companies registered during this period.

The registrations of self-employed people (PFA) went up by 12.2% during this period, reaching 11,565, after a drop in 2016.

Bucharest saw the highest number of new companies between January and May this year, namely over 8,770. It was followed by the Cluj county, with 3,980 registrations, and Timis county, with 2,881 newly-established firms.

In total, 113,167 companies were registered last year, with over 64,400 of them being SRLs.
