Some Romanians can travel to Canada without visas

02 May 2017

Romanians can enter Canada or transit the country by air with an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), without needing a visa starting May 1, according to a press release of the Foreign Affairs Ministry issued yesterday.

This authorization can only be used by Romanian citizens who have had a temporary residence visa in Canada for the past ten years and those who currently hold a valid non-immigrant visa that allows entering the US.

Under the eTA, Romanian citizens can enter Canadian territory for a period of up to six months only for tourism purposes, to visit friends or family, or if they carry out businesses. However, Romanians who wish to study or work in Canada still need visas in the next months. All Romanian citizens will be able to travel to Canada without a visa starting December 1.

At the end of October last year, the Canadian Government decided to remove the visas for all Romanians travelling to Canada starting December 1, 2017. The Canadian Government’s decision was conditioned by the signing of the free trade agreement between the European Union and Canada (CETA).
