Romanian President decorates star gymnasts

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis decorated gymnasts Catalina Ponor, Larisa Iordache, and Marian Dragulescu on Wednesday, after they won medals for Romania at the European Gymnastics Championships organized in Cluj-Napoca last week.

While Catalina Ponor and Marian Dragulescu were awarded the Order of Faithful Service in rank of Officer, Larisa Iordache was decorated with the Order "The Sportive Merit", Class III, with a beret.

The three gymnasts were decorated “as a sign of high appreciation for the outstanding achievements at the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Cluj-Napoca (April 19-23), for the talent, passion, dedication, and professionalism used for the international affirmation of the Romanian sport,” reads the statement from the Romanian Presidential Administration.

Romanian gymnast Marian Dragulescu won gold in the Championships’ men’s floor competition, and silver in the vault final. Meanwhile, Catalina Ponor won a gold medal in the balance beam competition while Larisa Iordache got bronze in the same competition.

Romania thus gathered four medals, two of which were gold, at the European Championships hosted in Cluj-Napoca.
