The Romanian Naval Forces have brought their first nine AAV-7 amphibious assault vehicles into service, marking the initial delivery under a procurement programme launched with the United States in 2023. A ceremony was held on Monday, September 28, at the Babadag military garrison in Tulcea county.
Romania plans to acquire 65 AAV-7 vehicles for the 307th Marine Infantry Regiment “Heracleea.” The programme covers 21 vehicles in its first phase and another 44 in the second, with deliveries scheduled between 2026 and 2031.
The AAV-7 is a tracked amphibious assault vehicle designed to transport troops and cargo between ships, shorelines, and inland operating areas. According to the Romanian Navy, it offers the mobility required for marine operations and is interoperable with similar NATO forces.
“These combat vehicles will significantly improve the firepower and capabilities of Romanian Naval Forces personnel, providing them with greater response capacity in the Danube Delta region and along the Black Sea coast,” the Navy said.
Each AAV-7 has a three-member crew and can carry up to 21 fully equipped marines or five tonnes of cargo.
Its standard armament includes a 12.7 mm M2 heavy machine gun and a 40 mm MK-19 automatic grenade launcher, mounted together in a turret.
Romanian troops from the 307th Marine Infantry Regiment have trained regularly with the US Marine Corps since 2011. They have taken part in several multinational exercises involving AAV-7 vehicles operated by the United States.
