Romanian Government to build new airport in public-private partnership

29 June 2018

Romania’s Government has set up a list with eight major investment projects using public-private partnerships (PPP), including a new airport South of Bucharest.

Five others were approved in May, under the same regime. However, PM Viorica Dancila has not revealed any deadline or investment amount estimated for these projects.

Three of the new projects will be in healthcare sector, namely building a national blood, plasma and stem bank, a regional hospital in Timisoara (Western Romania) and a regional hospital in Galati (Eastern Romania) with 800-1,000 beds. Another project envisages preparing two rivers in Southern Romania for navigation, so they could be used for passenger and merchandise transport.

The Government also wants to build the South Bucharest airport with capacity of about 30 million passengers per year and a total area of 600 hectares, as transit point between Asia-Pacific and Europe-America.

The planned 190 km canal linking Siret with Baragan should back the construction of irrigation systems for 475,000 ha of farmland. The government also wants to build a factory for manufacturing electric transport vehicles and a new skiing complex in Fagaras mountains.
