Romanian low-cost airline Blue Air wants to buy aircraft with USD 1.8 bln

19 June 2017

Romanian low-cost airline Blue Air is in advanced negotiations with the US manufacturer Boeing to buy at least 20 new 737 Max aircraft.

The deal’s value could exceed USD 1.8 billion, according to Bloomberg. The transaction could be announced this week at the Paris Motor Show.

The decision to buy new aircraft comes after the national airline Tarom recently acquired two Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

Blue Air is the second largest airline in Romania, based on the number of passengers, after the Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air. Tarom lost the second position among local airlines last year, being surpassed by Blue Air.

Wizz Air and Blue Air launched domestic flights from Cluj-Napoca to Bucharest last year whereas Ryanair has opened the Timisoara – Bucharest route, with much lower prices than Tarom.
