Romanian billionaire Tiriac asks authorities to build new tennis arena in Bucharest

12 February 2016

Romanian billionaire Ion Tiriac said that he would give up the license for the tennis tournament BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy if local authorities didn’t build a new tennis arena in Bucharest.

The Progresul Arena (BNR Court), where the tournament is currently held, could collapse, according to experts, said Tiriac.

“The poor infrastructure has prevented us from taking the tournament to the next level, ATP 500,” the former tennis player said, reports local Mediafax.

The Progresul arena was built during the communist period, in only seven days, said Tiriac, so it’s not really modern.

Ion Tiriac owns the license of the men's tennis tournament in Bucharest. The 2016 edition will take place from April 18 to 24, and has total prizes of over EUR 520,000.
