Romania, Republic of Moldova extend natural gas pipeline

25 May 2015

The Iasi-Ungheni pipeline will be extended to Chisinau, in the Republic of Moldova, and to Onesti, in Romania.

The two countries’ prime ministers signed last week a memorandum during Victor Ponta’s visit in the Republic of Moldova.

It is not yet known which Romanian company will deliver gas to the neighboring country, namely Petrom or Romgaz.

Extending the Iasi-Ungheni pipeline to Chisinau involves an investment of EUR 110-150 million, according to a Romanian document, cited by local Ziarul Financiar. The construction would take 2-3 years.

The 43-km Iasi-Ungheni pipeline was inaugurated in August last year. It was built to reduce the Republic of Moldova’s dependence on the Russian gas.
