30 November 2016

Romania's Supreme Defense Council - CSAT has increased by 500 the number of Romanian troops that can carry out missions and operations outside the Romanian state.

About 1,688 troops will be allocated for foreign operations in 2017, up by over 500 troops compared to 2016, president Klaus Iohannis announced on Tuesday, November 29.

Of the total number, 1,039 can be effectively deployed in operation theaters whereas 649 troops will remain in Romania, but can be deployed upon an order, Iohannis added.

At the level of the Interior Ministry, 1,527 gendarmes and police will participate in such missions in 2017. Of them, 758 will be effectively deployed and 769 can be deployed upon an order.

Romania’s biggest contribution will be to the NATO mission in Afghanistan, said Klaus Iohannis.

“I reiterate the fact that the military participation outside the Romanian state is an important component of Romania's strategic profile within the international community,” the President said.
