Cluj Medical School Museum inaugurated for public

The "Iuliu Hațieganu" University of Medicine and Pharmacy (UMF) in Cluj-Napoca inaugurated the Museum of the Cluj Medical School to preserve and promote its academic heritage. The museum's opening ceremony was attended by members of the academic community, including Prof. Dr. Ioan-Aurel Pop, President of the Romanian Academy, and Prof. Dr. Irinel Popescu, corresponding member of the Romanian Academy.

The museum offers visitors a glimpse into the two-and-a-half centuries of medical education in Cluj-Napoca, showcasing the university's history through exhibits and documents.

The rector of the University, Prof. Dr. Anca Dana Buzoianu, emphasized that the museum serves as a bridge between the past and present, honoring the contributions made to medical education and research in the region.

"It is a tribute to those who have contributed to the development of medical education and research in this region and, at the same time, a testament to our commitment to preserve and pass on this rich heritage to future generations," says the rector.

The idea of establishing the museum originated in the interwar period and was realized through the efforts of Professor Jules Guiart and Valeriu L. Bologa. The collections include objects, books, and documents related to the history of Romanian medicine.

The museum is located in a historically significant building where important meetings of the Governing Council took place.

The museum features a permanent exhibition showcasing the historical stages of the Cluj Medical School from the 18th century to the present. It also displays medical, pharmaceutical, and laboratory apparatus from the 19th and 20th centuries. A special room pays tribute to Professor Iuliu Hațieganu, the university's namesake, showcasing furniture, documents, photographs, and books that highlight his notable achievements.

In addition to the permanent exhibition, the museum will host temporary exhibitions in partnership with other cultural institutions.

It is open for visits from Monday to Friday, between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., by prior appointment.
