Over EUR 800 million to improve conditions in Romanian prisons

The Government has approved several measures to improve the conditions in Romanian prisons, which require EUR 838.5 million investments between 2016 and 2023.

The National Prison Administration will provide EUR 740 million, the Interior Ministry will give EUR 76.7 million whereas the National Probation Direction will cover EUR 21.4 million of the amount.

The local prison system currently faces a shortage of accommodation places. The National Prison Administration plans to create 10,895 new accommodation places and to modernize 1,651 accommodation places in local penitentiaries by 2023.

The system will also need new employees. Over 5,800 new people should be employed by 2023.
