UBS analysts think that Vodafone should sell its operations in Romania

Telecom company Vodafone should sell its assets in several countries, including Romania, Australia, Hungary and the Czech Republic, where it is not a market leader and where it does not have access to landline telephony infrastructure, according to a report of UBS’ brokerage division, quoted by Financial Times. On the long term, Vodafone could be taken over or could analyze a deal to restructure its business in these countries, said UBS. Two buyers that would make sense are American AT&T and Japan’s SoftBank. Vodafone is the second largest telecom group in the world, after China Mobile, and has telephony networks in 21 countries. In Romania, Vodafone is the second largest mobile carrier after Orange, but the leader of the overall telecom market is the Telekom Romania group, which has integrated services, both fixed and mobile. Vodafone Romania has 8.5 million customers, most of whom use mobile telephony services. The company is currently trying to convince the local regulator to open fixed lines operated by its competitors to all market players.
