Three Romanian technocrat ministers join political party during electoral year

Three Romanian ministers, previously technocrats, have joined the ruling coalition party the Social Democratic Party PSL. Justice Minister Robert Cazanciuc, Education Minister Remus Pricopie and the Minister Delegate for Budget Liviu Voinea all joined the PSD. “At a certain point, inevitably, you take on the advantages and disadvantages of political support,” said the Romanian Prime Minister of the move. As the Government is run by a coalition, with some ministers coming from PSD and others from its coalition party the National Liberal Party PNL, the trio's decision raised questions about balance of powers in the executive. However, “the three were already considered as representing the PSD within the Government,” said the PM Victor Ponta. It is expected that all ministers will be involved in political campaigning this year, as elections for the European Parliament and for president approach.
