Romania's telecom market slighlty down to EUR 3.5 bln in 2011, but year's second half revenues picked up

Total revenues from Romania's electronic communications market were down 3 percent in 2011 on 2010, to some EUR 3.5 billion, according to data from the National Authority for Management and Regulation in Communications (ANCOM).

Compared to the year-on-year drop registered in 2011, the revenue drop from last year was considerably lower. In the second half of the year, there were numerous increases in certain areas, such as the revenues gained by mobile telephone networks and services, with an increase of 7 percent, while revenues obtained by internet service providers rose by 8 percent. The areas that saw the most significant increase in revenue during the second half of 2011 were value added service providers, which increased by 36 percent, and data transmission providers, which increased by 24 percent. “The increase of the operators’ revenues in the second half of 2011 indicates that the electronic communications market has reached a level of stability after the difficult period, which the entire economy underwent in the past 3 years. The providers present on the market adapted themselves to the economic reality and managed to reconfigure their offers so as to reduce the effects of the economic downturn,” said Catalin Marinescu, the president of ANCOM. The areas which gained the most revenue in 2011 were mobile telephone providers, which were responsible for 37 percent of all revenue, terrestrial public mobile networks – 14 percent and internet service providers, which accounted for 13 percent.
