Romania's Tax Administration could have a new IT system in 2018

Romania’s Tax Administration ANAF could have a new information system only in 2018, said ANAF president Gelu Diaconu. The current system is too old and it’s not worth investing in it, Diaconu added, reports local Hotnews.ro. ANAF will only make sure that it is operational until the new system comes out. This will cost EUR 100 million, and the public tender will take place in May this year. The ANAF president also said that several obscure law firms hosted thousands of ghost companies in Bucharest. Using their special status, they introduce the ghost firms in chain transactions, and help other companies avoid paying taxes to the state. He made this statement as ANAF has been under fire by the business associations in Romania for asking companies to file in a lot of paperwork in order to get registered as VAT payers. Much of the tax evasion in Romania is done by fictitious transactions with ghost firms to reduce the VAT paid to the state. editor@romania-insider.com
