Romania’s private sector employs only 13% of country’s population

With a share of only 13.76 percent of the population, Romania has the lowest percentage of employees that work in the private sector, out of 21 analysed EU countries, said Ovidiu Nicolescu, president of the SMEs’ National Council (CNIPMMR). “Unlike Romania, Switzerland has a level of employees in the private sector of 28.49 percent of the population, while Denmark - 26.57 percent. This explains very clearly the difference of competitiveness between our country and the two mentioned states,” said Ovidiu Nicolescu, cited by local newswire Agerpres. He added that there are only some 1,500 big companies in Romania and over 400,000 SME’s. According to him, a way to improve the business environment is by reducing with at least 25 percent the number of fiscal payments for entrepreneurs. Irina Popescu, irina.popescu@romania-insider.com
