Romania’s new Parliament rejects President’s request to reexamine law removing 102 taxes

The law on removing 102 non-fiscal taxes in Romania, a project promoted by Social-Democratic leader Liviu Dragnea during the electoral campaign, will get back to the President unchanged after the Senate and Chamber of Deputies rejected the President’s request to reexamine it on Wednesday. President Klaus Iohannis thus has no other option than to sign it. The law may thus become effective in January 2017. It removes 102 non-fiscal taxes, including the ratio-TV tax, used to finance the public radio and television, and the environment tax that Romanians pay when registering imported second-hand cars. The law removing 102 non-fiscal taxes was unanimously voted on October 25, just before the start of the electoral campaign in Romania. President Iohannis challenged the law at the Constitutional Court, in November. On December 16, the Court decided that the law was constitutional. However, Klaus Iohannis sent back the law back to the Parliament asking for its reexamination. editor@romania-insider.com
