Romania’s new Government gets Parliament’s confidence vote

Romania’s new Government led by former European Agriculture Commissioner Dacian Ciolos was voted by the Parliament with a large majority on Tuesday afternoon. The new Cabinet got 389 votes “for” and only 115 “against”, as both the Social Democratic Party (PSD), which has been governing in the past three years, and the National Liberal Party (PNL) expressed their support. The new Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos said in his speech in front of the Parliament that the new Government would rely on transparency in the decision making process, responsibility and openness to dialog. He also said that the Government would work to remove the causes of the Colectiv tragedy, especially corruption, and that it would be a “permanent and open partner” for the Parliament. President Klaus Iohannis wrote on Facebook that the confidence vote the Parliament gave to the new Government was proof that the politicians have understood that a technocrat Government was the best solution for Romania at the moment. “The Ciolos cabinet will have a difficult task and it will be impossible for it to fulfill the objectives in the governing program without a consistent support from the Parliament,” Iohannis wrote.
