Romania's electoral race is on between ‘heirs’ of president & of former jailed PM

Elena Udrea, the president of the Popular Movement Party (PMP) and one of the candidates in the race for the presidential seat this fall has said the race will be on between ‘the heir’ of incumbent president Traian Basescu, and ‘the heir’ of former Prime Minister Adrian Nastase. She was referring to the electoral fight between herself and the current Prime Minister Victor Ponta, whom she perceives as the successor of Adrian Nastase, also a former PM and former president of the Social Democrat Party much like Ponta. The association between the former and current PM however is an ill – fated one, as Nastase has just been released from jail after serving time for his second corruption convictions. Udrea herself has recently received the public support of president Traian Basescu, who is at his last presidential mandate and who cannot run for president anymore. Both Udrea and Ponta will launch their official candidacies on September 21. editor@romania-insider.com
