Romanians buy some 150 million eggs for Easter

Romanians buy some 150 million eggs for the Easter holidays from retailers and from peasants, according to the Romanian Poultry Growers Union. They spend around EUR 15 million considering an average price of EUR 1 for a carton of ten eggs, according to estimates by Profit.ro. However, the price of a carton can go over EUR 2 for free-range eggs. Egg consumption increases over the Easter period as they are painted for the occasion and served hard-boiled. Thus, in April, local consumption reaches some 150 million eggs while in a regular month, some 120 million eggs come out of Romanian farms, according to Ilie Van, president of the Romanian Poultry Growers Union, quoted by Profit.ro. Of the 150 million eggs sold during the month of April for the Easter holidays, some 70 million are bought from retailers, while approximately 80 million are bought directly from local farmers, according to Van.
