Romanian tennis star Simona Halep goes up to number 4 in the world

Romanian tennis player Simona Halep will move to the fourth position WTA officially next week, as Belarusian Victoria Azarenka will not attend the Rome tournament because of an injury. The WTA real time rankings already show Halep at number four in the world, the best ever performance held by a Romanian tennis player. Halep, who moved to top 10 in the world in the beginning of 2014, recently finished runner-up at the Mutua Madrid Open, losing in the final to Russian Maria Sharapova, who moved from 9 to 7. The world top three remained unchanged with US champion Serena Williams leading the pack, followed by China’s Na Li and Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska. Other Romanians in the rankings include Sorana Cirstea at 27, Alexandra Cadantu who gained two spots since last week and is now 71, Monica Niculescu who sits at 78 and while Irina Begu climbe who climbed nine spots to 88. editor@romania-insider.com
